Bodyguard Movie Review - Komal Nahta

Salman Khan dons the uniform of a bodyguard to protect Kareena Kapoor in the movie ‘Bodyguard’. Should you watch the movie? What will be its box-office fate? Find out more in the review by Komal Nahta.
Business rating: 4/5 stars
Star cast: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Raj Babbar, Hazel Keech

What’s Good: Salman Khan’s endearing character; his performance; the mass-appealing action and comedy; the well-tuned music and well-choreographed songs
What’s Bad: The half-baked screenplay; the unanswered questions that leave the audience with a feeling of incompleteness

Verdict: Riding on Salman Khan’s wave of popularity, Bodyguard will prove to be a box-office hit.

Loo break: Not really.
Watch or Not?: Watch Bodyguard for Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s performances.

Reel Life Productions and Reliance Entertainment’s Bodyguard, as the title suggests, is the story of a bodyguard. Lovely Singh (Salman Khan) is a strong and super-efficient bodyguard whom Sartaj Rana (Raj Babbar) of Jaisinghpur chooses for the protection of his only daughter, Divya (Kareena Kapoor), who is studying in a city college. At first, Divya is embarrassed by Lovely Singh accompanying her to college and right into her classroom. But when she sees him protecting her from Ranjan Mhatre’s (Mahesh Manjrekar) hoodlums who have come to kill her, she is might impressed. Before long, she is head over heels in love with him. However, as she is too scared of her rich and influential father and since she is also aware that Lovely Singh is too indebted to her father to ever even dream of marrying her, she expresses her love to him by speaking to him over the telephone under an alias (Chhaya) and by camouflaging her voice. Lovely Singh also falls in love with Chhaya although he doesn’t know her real identity.

Divya’s best friend and roommate, Maya (Hazel Keech), warns her against going ahead with her love story as she foresees it ending as a disaster. Unperturbed, Divya continues with the romance till one day, she realises that Lovely Singh would never fall in love with her as he would take the act of falling in love with her as akin to backstabbing her father whom he worships as God. Crestfallen, she tries to break off from Lovely Singh only to realise the she loves him too dearly to be able to break all ties.

Even as her education is about to get over, Divya alias Chhaya musters courage to propose marriage to Lovely Singh who agrees without still knowing that Chhaya is none other than Divya.

What happens thereafter? Does Divya succeed in getting married to Lovely Singh? Does the latter get to know that Chhaya is none other than his Divya madame? Does Sartaj Rana get wind of what his daughter and her bodyguard are up to? What about Ranjan Mhatre and his mission to kill Divya? Is Lovely Singh able to save Divya’s life – and his own? Does Maya help Divya to finally unite in matrimony with Lovely Singh? Answers to these questions are revealed in the long-drawn climax.

Bodyguard Review – Script Analysis

Remake of the Malayalam film of the same name and loosely inspired by the Hollywood film of the same name, Bodyguard has an interesting plot that had the germs of a terrific screenplay and drama. However, the screenplay, penned by Siddique, J.P. Chowksey and Kiran Kotrial with inputs by Salim Khan, is one of so much convenience that the audience is left with a feeling of incompleteness. The entire angle of Divya changing her voice when she pretends to be Chhaya (Karisma Kapoor’s voice is used to dub the dialogues mouthed by Chhaya over the telephone) looks half-baked and just too convenient to really impress the viewers. The funny part is that many among the audience may not even realise that the voice of Chhaya is that of another actress (Karisma Kapoor) because the same result could be achieved by Divya’s (Kareena Kapoor) own voice with, say, a slight huskiness or accent or some such change. It is also not clear why Chhaya keeps treating Divya as somebody whom she doesn’t like or care for, whenever she talks to Lovely Singh. It isn’t as if Lovely Singh is in love with Divya and Chhaya wants to get Divya out of her way or as if Chhaya wants to test Lovely Singh’s love for her. Chhaya’s outbursts against Divya seem all the more ridiculous or redundant given that Divya and Chhaya are the same person – a fact known to the audience.

The writers have not bothered to establish why Ranjan Mhatre is thirsting for Divya’s blood. Of course, one is led to believe that Ranjan Mhatre has a score to settle with Divya’s dad, but considering that so much footage is devoted to the bodyguard protecting Divya’s life, it would have been far more sensible to establish, howsoever briefly, the enmity between Sartaj Rana and Ranjan Mhatre. And if the enmity has arisen because Sartaj Rana failed an attempt by Ranjan Mhatre to sell girls of his village to brothels in Thailand, well, the connection is not properly established.

The twist in the tale, revealed when Lovely Singh comes with his little son to meet Sartaj Rana before he (Lovely Singh) leaves for some time to Canada, may be pretty interesting and even shocking but again, it comes like a convenient twist. That Lovely Singh never tried to keep in touch with Sartaj Rana for years thereafter seems an impossibility because as far as he (Lovely Singh) was concerned, he wasn’t guilty of any wrong vis-à-vis Sartaj Rana. Also, had there been some ground-work leading to the twist in the end, the audience may have found it more believable even if the shock value may have been reduced a bit.

Lovely Singh is shown as a conscientious bodyguard, for whom duty comes before even his personal life, and that is all very fine. But to show him as dumb as he has been shown to be seems like too much of an exaggeration.

All in all, the screenplay writers have done a hurried job and seem to have made a whole lot of assumptions which the audience may not like to make. This is not to say that there are no plus points. There are actually several of them. For one, the character of Lovely Singh is so endearing that the viewer in no time falls in love with him. Similarly, even though Divya goes in too round-and-about a manner to express her love to Lovely Singh, her helplessness does touch the audience’s heart. The songs are not just well-worded but are also well-tuned and well-choreographed, making them a delight to watch. Another major plus point is the abundant action in the film, which will especially be loved by the masses and the audience in single-screen cinemas.

Besides action and romance, the third pillar of the film is comedy. While action is excellent and the romance is fairly good, the comedy track of Tsunami (Rajat Rawail) is often kiddish and irritating and it fails to evoke the desired laughter. However, the comedy of Lovely Singh is often entertaining and even heart warming.

Bodyguard Review – Star Performances & Direction

Salman Khan lives the character of Lovely Singh. He looks like a million bucks and acts very efficiently. In one word, he is truly endearing. Kareena Kapoor does a remarkable job. She makes the emotional scenes extremely watchable in spite of several of them appearing unjustified. She shines as Divya. Hazel Keech does an ordinary job. Raj Babbar is fair. Aditya Pancholi is good in a brief special appearance. However, the scene in which he is shown to be operating a remote-controlled helicopter looks a bit weird. Mahesh Manjrekar does fairly well. Chetan Hansraj gets limited scope and do as desired. Rajat Rawail is not impressive as Tsunami and, in the absence of a strong flair for comedy, often relies on his bulky weight and some funny and not so funny lines to create mirth. Needless to add, he succeeds only very occasionally. Asrani is wasted in an inconsequential role. Sharat Saxena does what is needed of him. Mohan Kapur makes his presence felt in the singular scene he appears in. Vidya Singh is average. Katrina Kaif looks bewitching and dances extraordinarily in a portion of the title song in a friendly appearance. Karisma Kapoor’s voice acting is good but not many in the audience would even realise that the voice of Chhaya is Karisma’s: they’d assume that it is Kareena’s voice modulated a bit! Shashi Kiran and the other provide the desired support.

Siddique’s direction is good but could have been better. Although he has tried to make a wholesome entertainer, he doesn’t excel in any department. Music is a plus point. All the four songs are appealing but none has been supremely popular. The title track, ‘Teri meri, meri teri prem kahani’ and ‘Desi beats’ (all composed by Himesh Reshmmiya) have pep and pace. The ‘I love you’ number (set to tune by Pritam) is also a popular song. Lyrics, penned by Shabbir Ahmed and Neelesh Mishra, are appropriate. Choreography may not be mind blowing but the songs have been picturised in a way that they entertain and also become eye-filling. The dance steps in the title song are different and graceful. The picturisation of ‘Prem kahani’ song is sensuous and visually appealing. The ‘Desi beats’ song is visually rich. The ‘I love you’ song is youthful. Sandeep Shirodkar’s background score is alright. S. Vijayan’s action scenes have been composed with a special eye on the masses and Salman Khan’s fans. Sejal Shah’s cinematography is excellent. Sets (Angelica Monica Bhowmick) are of a very good standard. Editing, by Sanjay Sankla, is sharp.
Bodyguard Review – Komal Nahta’s Verdict

On the whole, Bodyguard had the germs to become a super-hit fare but it remains a good fare mainly because its script looks contrived and too convenient at places. All the same, it will prove to be a box-office hit because of several extraneous factors going in its favour – Salman Khan riding the wave of popularity, its release on the festive occasion of Eid and the public’s hunger for larger than life star-studded entertainment as there has been no such real entertainer since five weeks, which has resulted in an earth-shattering opening.

Bodyguard opens to a huge response

Bodyguard has opened to a historic response at multiplexes all over the country. From North to West to East to South the response is the same all over. With multiplexes smashing all opening records it is a certainty that single screens will follow when they get going from noon onwards smashing all records in terms of collections.

The opening of Bodyguard is the biggest ever in the multiplex era beating likes of Dhoom 2, Ghajini, Three Idiots and Dabangg.

A city like Mumbai which is over saturated with multiplexes saw full houses in the morning and this is a rarity especially as releases keep getting bigger and bigger.

The first day is heading towards being the biggest ever although there is a major cricket match featuring India tonight so collections of the last few shows may be affected a little bit but even here looking at the momentum the film has at the box office, the affect may be minimal.

Rockstar Theatrical Trailer

Bodyguard can have 80+ weekend(5 day).

Bodyguard has taken a phenomenal advance be it single screens which started last week or multiplexes where plans opened yesterday. The potential for this this film to collect is just mind boggling with the extended weekend and humungous release. But the word is 'potential' because there can be a huge difference between the five day weekend depending on whether it meets the public expectations or not.

Dabangg released last year collected 68 crore nett over its first five days and there the five day included a Monday and Tuesday while with Bodyguard the first two days will be Wednesday and Thursday and then the weekend will follow which is huge advantage.

If Dabanng had a similar extended weekend, the film would have done around 76 crore nett and here Bodyguard has a bigger release and higher ticket rates so if the film meets the expectations the public has from the film, an 80-85 crore nett total for five days is on the cards.

However it as all about content and what the public expect from the film because today the openings for event films are so high that if the film does not meet expectations the collections come down very fast from there elevated levels. Basically if Bodyguard meets the expectations of the public, the film will collect over 80 crore nett over its first five days and even a higher total is very much possible.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu First Look Poster

Post Imran Khan's path breaking film Delhi Belly, the performance bar for the actor has been set pretty high. With YRF's Mere Brother Ki Dulhan set to release soon, the first look of Imran and Kareena starrer for Dharma Productions is out.

The Karan Johar and UTV Motion Pictures' film Short Term Shaadi, starring Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan, is now re-titled as Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.

Clarifying this change, Karan says that Short Term Shaadi was just a working title that attached itself to this film through the making. Neither director Shakun Batra nor Karan was happy with it from the start. Hence, the change to Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.

Besides this, KJo adds that the new title fits this rom-com perfectly well. "Short Term Shaadi wasn't giving the right vibe. This story is about the conversational chemistry between these two very beautiful people. EMAET is a witty, feel-good, slice-of-life comedy and it conveys the energies of this couple.''

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu will release on February 10, 2012 and KJo recommends it as the perfect Valentine's Day flick.

Bipasha Basu in Raaz 3

At the very start of her career, Bipasha Basu starred in two films of the Bhatt camp- Raaz and Jism. Both went on to become super-hits and catapulted Bips to stardom. However, post that, the actress didn't really work with the Bhatts and even turned down an offer to star in Bhatts' latest smash-hit Murder 2.

It was speculated that Bipasha had a fall-out with the Bhatts but now in a surprising turn of events, Bips has agreed to star in Raaz 3 which will be directed Vikram Bhatt for Vishesh Films. Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt have decided that let bygones be bygones and have once again welcomed the dusky beauty into the Bhatt camp with open arms.

Raaz 3
stars Emraan Hashmi and Jacqueline Fernandez and now with the addition of Bipasha Basu, the cast of this horror flick, has only got hotter.

Aamir to create Dhoom with Hollywood actress

Every A-list heroine in Bollywood wants it, Katrina Kaif almost got it, but now the most anticipated role of the year opposite Aamir Khan will feature a Hollywood star.

The latest rumour on the Dhoom 3 front is that producer Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya have decided to cast a Hollywood actress to play Aamir’s love interest.

The flash-decision was taken a fortnight ago in a closed-door meeting. Apparently Yashraj is not looking at a non-descript Caucasian starlet, like the ones who paired with Aamir Khan in Lagaan and Rang De Basanti.

The stars they are actually looking forward to do their film are Oscar winner Natalie Portman, Spanish superstar Penelope Cruz and Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives fame.

A source says, “The names you mention are definitely in the list. Yashraj has never worked with an international star in any of its films. The production house has now decided to take the Dhoom franchise to a global level.

One safe and effective way of going global would be the casting of a Hollywood hottie.” A formal announcement is expected to follow soon.

Confirming the same, Yashraj’s official spokesperson says, “Yes, as of now some new international options are being considered.”

The role will involve sporting swimwear and a passionate kissing scene with Aamir; the parts that Katrina had problems with and thus failed to land the dream role.

Jacqueline will star opposite Hrithik in Krrish 2

It's been talked about for some time now, the sequel to the first Indian superhero movie
Krrish. The film, which is being made by Rakesh Roshan and stars Hrithik, was recently in the news when Chitrangda Singh was signed on to play the female lead in the film.

However, things have changed and so has the star cast of the film. Bollywood Hungama has learnt that Krrish 2 which was earlier supposed to hit the floors by October has been delayed and the shoot will now begin in December. With this change in schedule, the leading lady Chitrangda opted out of the film citing date issues.

Following this, the Roshans met up with the young actor who has been making all the right moves since her dare bare role in
Murder 2 - Jacqueline Fernandez. The trio met to discuss the film, at a meeting that lasted apparently for three hours, post which Jacqueline was finalized for the part. Though buzz in the industry says that Chitrangda opted out after her role in the film was altered and made to seem like a cameo, the Roshans hold tight, citing date issues.

Aarakshan drops on tuesday

Aarakshan had a big fall in collections on Tuesday as it collected around 2.25-2.50 crore nett. The collections normally fall after a big holiday but the collections of Aarakshan fell much more than normal. The fall was across the board even in places like Punjab and Nizam which had a late release.

The film is now heading for a 31 crore nett week and is unlikely to do much thereafter. Aarakshan managed to stay afloat for the extended weekend due to holidays but the initial reports which were not good came into play as the holiday period ended and the collections came down badly.

The film does not have competition in the form of a major releases this week but as appreciation is not there for Aarakshan it is unlikely to benefit.

Aarakshan four day business

Aarakshan did well on Independence Day as it collected around 6.50 crore nett as per early estimates which means a 25 crore nett total for four days. Independence day is one of the biggest holidays of the year and with it falling on Monday is a big boost for the film.

The film had its best day in East Punjab as all of the circuit was screening the film. In other circuits the drops ranged from 5-20% from its Sunday business.

The fate of the film will be decided over the next few days but with the Independence day collections, the 25 crore nett total in four day is decent collection.

The film has done good to decent business at multiplexes over the first four days while single screen business is low.

Aarakshan cleared in Andhra Pradesh for release

HYDERABAD: Aarakshan, the controversial Hindi movie, has been cleared for screening in the cinema halls of the state from Sunday. The orders to this effect were issued by the state government based on the recommendations of a committee constituted to preview the movie following objections raised by some SC, ST and BC organisations to screening of the film based on reservations.

Andhra Pradesh is the third state after Uttar Pradesh and Punjab to impose ban on the exhibition of the movie after several SC, ST and BC communities raised objections to certain dialogues and scenes in the movie. They expressed apprehensions that these dialogues and scenes might hurt the sentiments of SC, ST and BC communities. The state government constituted a committee headed by the principal secretary for social welfare to preview the movie within a week and submit a report.

The committee along with the representatives of the SC,ST and BC associations viewed the movie on Friday and submitted a report to the government on Saturday recommending clearing the film for screening.

The committee commended the theme of the film Aarakshan and recommended release of the revised version. It is learnt the producers of the film have agreed to duly incorporate minor modifications suggested by the committee.

Mausam Music Review - Joginder Tuteja

EXPECTATIONS

There can't be anything less than a sure shot superhit soundtrack that one expects from Mausam. After all Pritam had created magic for Shahid's Jab We Met while songs from Kismat Konnection are still hot favourite at satellite channels. Now when Mausam is a huge film for Shahid with his dad Pankaj Kapur directing it, there can't be any shortcomings whatsoever. With Irshad Kamil stepping in as a lyricist, one is more or less assured of a treat in the offering.

MUSIC

It is a winner of a beginning with 'Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye' kick-starting the album. Even as opening sound reminds one of the kind that was heard in 'Bheegi Bheegi' [Raajneeti], one of the best compositions till date by Pritam, you only gear up further to check out what does singer Shahid Mallya has to offer. Rest assured, he pretty much justifies his inclusion as a namesake singer by rendering this track in just the manner as Shahid Kapoor would have wanted.

A melodious composition that requires just one listening to be declared a sure shot success in the making, 'Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye' also appears in another version that has 'Rahat Fateh Ali Khan' at the helm of affairs. It is during this version when one gets an impression of the song being on the same lines as 'Aaj Din Chadheya' from Love Aaj Kal. Does one mind that? Not at all as the familiarity factor only makes it further catchy.

If one thought that 'Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye' was good then 'Sajh Dhaj Ke' only ensures that Mausam would indeed turn out to be one of the most popular albums of the season. A 'bhangra' track sung with aplomb by Mika who comes with one of his most spirited efforts behind the mike, 'Sajh Dhaj Ke' has Punjabi at the core of it all and reminds one of a setting similar to that of 'Bhootni Ke' [Singh Is Kinng]. With English words thrown in as well that make 'Sajh Dhaj Ke' all the more lively and funnier, expect the song to be a hot favourite not just during the festivities and celebrations but also the dance floors, courtesy as many as two additional remix versions (Desi Mix Tiger Style and Club Mix Tiger Style) spicing the affairs further.

Quality content of Mausam is further established with 'Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi' that has an unlikely singer behind the mike in the form of Hans Raj Hans. With a rather extended 'alaap' beginning the track, you know that you are in for a 'desi' outing with the opening male chorus on the same lines as the one heard in 'Saude Bazi' [Aakrosh]. Nevertheless the similarity ends just at this stage with Hans Raj Hans making the song his own with his soulful rendition.

A love song that may not warm you up as instantly as was the case in 'Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye' or 'Sajh Dhaj Ke', 'Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi' eventually turns out to be pretty likeable as well once heard 3-4 times. A couple of more versions that follow later, 'Reprise' by Shahid Mallya and 'Mehfil Mix' by Wadali Brothers ensures that it is difficult to let go off the song even as the soundtrack proceeds.

First ever quintessential situational track in Mausam arrives in the form of 'Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hainv'. A sad love song where Rashid Khan is entrusted with the responsibility of creating pathos for the on-screen characters, this is pretty much set in the 60s mode and diverts the album from the lively mood that it had carried so far. Though well written, it isn't the kind that goes on to become a smash success by any means. Expect the song to play in the background. The song that immediately follows, 'Aag Lage Us Aag Ko', is a traditional track that has a Gujarati base to it. Rendered by Karsan Das Sagathia, it is in the 'Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje' [Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam] mode and should perk up the narrative of the film as it appears to have been created for an intense situation in the film.

What comes as a surprise though, a pleasant at one at that, is 'Mallo Malli' which brings Mausam into the Kismat Konnection/ Badmaash Company mode, what with Pritam giving Shahid what he would have been yearning for all this while - 'an urban dance floor number'. Yes, the song is a complete diversion from the rest of the album which has a far more traditional/rustic setting to it. However one doesn't mind at all when Tochi Raina goes singing about in the same mode as Neeraj Sridhar who is surprisingly missing in the entire album.

Nevertheless Tochi does a very good job in ensuring that 'Mallo Malli' turns out to be yet another track that has chartbuster written all over it. Expect a striking video with Shahid at his dancing best to take 'Mallo Malli' to an all new high even as it arrives in two more versions, one as a 'remix' featuring Tochi again and another with Lehmber Hussainpuri [who had recently done a fantastic job with 'Saddi Galli' (Tanu Weds Manu).

OVERALL
Mausam is a fantastic album and has all the ingredients that make for a popular soundtrack. There isn't really a low point in the album which may have a situational track or two but largely ensures that there is enough 'masala' in it to find acceptance amongst masses as well as classes. While 'Sajh Dhaj Ke' and 'Mallo Malli' are the pick of the lot when it comes to instant chartbusters in the making, 'Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye' and 'Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi' are good enough to enjoy a rather extended shelf life. Just pick this one up!

OUR PICK(S)
Sajh Dhaj Ke, Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye, Mallo Malli, Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi

Aarakshan Movie Review - Komal Nahta

Aarakshan deals with the education system of India. It tackles the issue of reservation policy in the education system as also the commercialisation of education by private coaching classes. Read the review for more.

Business rating: 2/5 stars

Star cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Manoj Bajpayee, Prateik Babbar, Tanvi Azmi.

What’s Good: Amitabh Bachchan’s sterling performance; turns and twists in the drama; the novel subject .

What’s Bad: The length of the film, making it boring in parts; the sermonising effect of the drama at places; the extra importance given to commercialisation of education in the second half so that the reservation issue gets relegated to the background, comparatively speaking.

Verdict: Aarakshan is an average fare but a court verdict against the ban (by three states) can act as a fantastic springboard for the box-office collections to take a leap. In other words, the film can do wonders if the Supreme Court were to lift the ban on it by three state governments.

Loo break: A couple of them in the second half.

Watch or Not?: Watch Aarakshan to decide for yourself whether it deserved to be banned.

Prakash Jha Productions and Base Industries Group’s Aarakshan (UA) is a social film based on the quota policy introduced by the government of India in the education system. The film blames the education system for not doing enough for the lower strata of society which, it says, led to the reservation policy for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes. It then shifts tracks and focuses on the commercialisation of education, concentrating mostly on the culture of coaching classes. It talks about how students are indirectly forced to join private coaching classes by paying hefty amounts by way of fees.

Prof. Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh Bachchan) is the principal of a college and is very idealistic. He has a soft corner for the financially weaker community of students including the Dalits. He runs special coaching classes at his house free of cost for the needy students. He has a strong liking for Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan), his student, who soon starts teaching in his college as a stop-gap arrangement before he goes away to America. Deepak and Poorbi (Deepika Padukone), daughter of Dr. Prabhakar Anand, are in love with each other. Sushant Seth (Prateik Babbar), who belongs to the high caste and rich class, is one of the students of the college.

One day, soon after the Supreme Court has upheld the quota system of the government, there is tension in the college between students of the economically backward classes, who stand to gain because of the quota policy, and of the affluent class, who now have to contend with the reservation policy in spite of otherwise being comparatively more merit-worthy. This prompts vice principal Mithilesh Singh (Manoj Bajpayee) to call the police to control the situation, something that doesn’t go down well with Prof. Anand who pulls up Mithilesh Singh for his hasty act of summoning the police on the college premises. Close on the heels of this incident, there is a war of words between Mithilesh Singh, Deepak Kumar and Sushant Seth. Prof. Anand suspends Sushant and also asks Deepak Kumar to get out when he (Deepak) refuses to calm down and instead, emotionally hurt as he is a Dalit, speaks rather rudely to Prof. Anand, even accusing him of casteist behaviour.

The face-off between Prof. Anand and Deepak Kumar leads to a breakup between Deepak and Poorbi who asks him to apologise to her father or forget her forever. Meanwhile, the trustees of the college in cahoots with Mithilesh Singh manipulate things in such a way that Prof. Anand is asked to step down from the principal’s post when he questions Mithilesh Singh about the private coaching classes he runs as his side business in spite of the college rules not allowing him to do so. What’s worse, Mithilesh Singh teaches in his coaching classes during the time he ought to be in college. Once Prof. Anand is thrown out, Mithilesh Singh is promoted as the new principal.

Further humiliation awaits Prof. Anand. A house he owned and had, on humanitarian grounds, allowed his friend’s two sons to use to run computer classes, is given on rent by the two sons to Mithilesh Singh to run his coaching class. Prof. Anand is not just against the business of coaching classes but is also angry with Mithilesh Singh for having played dirty politics with him. But now, he has to see his own house being used by the very Mithilesh Singh for the very business he detests, which, incidentally, is flourishing. Homeless now as the accommodation provided by the college has had to be vacated by him, Prof. Anand is at his wits’ end.

He soon starts coaching students for free, in a cow shed which is bang opposite his own house (occupied by Mithilesh Singh for running his coaching class). Deepak Kumar, who has gone off to America, returns to India on learning about Prof. Anand’s state. Sushant, too, comes to support Prof. Anand when he realises that Prof. Anand is indeed a genuine man. What happens thereafter? Is Prof. Anand able to avenge his humiliation at the hands of Mithilesh Singh? How? Does he forgive Deepak Kumar and Sushant? What about Prof. Anand’s coaching classes? Can they withstand the competition posed by Mithilesh Singh’s classes? And what about Deepak and Poorbi?

Aarakshan Review – Script Analysis

Prakash Jha’s story about the education system is an interesting topic for a film and quite novel too, considering that the two aspects of reservation policy and commercialisation of education have not been dealt with together in a big-budget film earlier. However, blame it on the title and on the initial reels, in which the issue of reservation is highlighted, but the audience feels a bit cheated when, in the second half, the focus shifts to commercialisation of education. Although a connection between the two is sought to be established, the same doesn’t come across too well. Even if one were to forget about the connection, one feels that the film, titled Aarakshan, leaves the burning issue midway and changes tracks. This may not have been felt had the film had a more all-encompassing title or if the film had not been such a serious issue-based drama. There’s nothing wrong in a film tackling two aspects of the education system but for the reasons mentioned above, the audience will get the feeling of the film changing tracks and not arriving at a proper conclusion over the reservation issue, which is what the viewers would expect. What the audience might also feel is that the commercialisation of education is a stand-alone problem and, therefore, should not have been juxtaposed with the quota issue. For, once the track of coaching classes begins, it assumes so much significance in the overall drama that the reservation policy issue seems to be relegated to the background – something which surprises the audience because the film begins so strongly as one about reservation.

The screenplay, penned by Praksah Jha and Anjum Rajab Ali, has its highs and lows. The first half is quite interesting and moves at a fairly good pace. The second half has several points where the drama dips. Scenes also appear to be repetitive, especially those of the coaching classes in the cow shed. However, the post-interval portion also has some highlight scenes and some brilliant twists and turns. Poorbi’s showdown with her father and her repentance later is one such highlight sequence. Prof. Anand being accused of using Deepak Kumar to settle scores with Mithilesh Singh is one example of the several interesting twists and turns.

The climax is quite ordinary as compared to the build-up leading to it. What should have been an exhilarating finale and a tear-jerking and clapworthy ending to a strong drama turns out to be a relatively tame affair.

The drama gets preachy at places and gives the effect of a sermon at times. The pace slackens and picks up intermittently. Dialogues, penned by Prakash Jha, are hard-hitting and go well with the story.

Aarakshan Review – Star Performances

Amitabh Bachchan does a marvellous job as Prof. Prabhakar Anand. He gets into the skin of the character and comes out a super-winner. His dialogue delivery is extraordinary and his body language is just too perfect. He proves yet again that he is like wine, only getting better with age. Saif Ali Khan acts ably. He gets limited scope and is absent for quite some time in between. This will not go down too well with the youth and with his fans. Deepika Padukone performs with perfect understanding. She is excellent in dramatic and emotional scenes. Manoj Bajpayee evokes instant hatred for himself, so natural is his performance. He plays the wily vice principal, who manipulates the situation to become the principal, with effortless ease. His get-up is perfectly suited to the character he plays. Tanvi Azmi does a remarkable job as Mrs. Anand. The scene in which she tells her daughter, Poorbi, what her husband, Prof. Prabhakar Anand, means to her is terrific and draws tears. Prateik Babbar is average. The scene in which he teaches students is unintentionally funny. He has not been photographed well. Hema Malini leaves a mark in the single sequence she is seen in in the end. Darshan Jariwala is lovely. Yashpal Sharma has his moments. Mukesh Tiwari, Chetan Pandit, Saurabh Shukla, Vinay Apte, Anita Kanwal, S.M. Zaheer, Aanchal Munjal and the others provide the desired support.

Aarakshan Review – Direction & Music

Prakash Jha’s direction is good but his narrative style is unable to prevent the pace from slackening and making the film boring at places. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is fair. Acha Lagta Hai is the best number. Mauka and the other songs are fairly nice. Prasoon Joshi’s lyrics are appealing. Song picturisations (by Jayesh Pradhan) could’ve been better. Wayne Sharp’s background music is pretty effective. Cinematography (Sachin Kumar Krishnan) is wonderful. Action scenes have been well-composed by Prem Sharma. Sets (Jayant Deshmukh) ought to have been more natural. Santosh Mandal’s editing could’ve been crisper.

Aarakshan Review – Komal Nahta’s Verdict

On the whole, Aarakshan is an average entertainer. It is too lengthy and boring in parts but it has some excellent scenes and drama which would appeal more to the North Indians. Considering its high cost on the one hand and its ban in some states on the other, it would be an uphill task for the film to cover its cost unless the ban is lifted quickly. The long first weekend (Monday being a public holiday for Independence Day) will prove very beneficial for the film’s business. It must be added here that if the court were to lift the ban, the publicity that would follow would help the film’s collections to take a big leap so that the film could become a comfortably earning proposition.

Akshay's moustache first look in Rowdy Rathore

No release of Aarakshan in Punjab,UP & Andhra

Aarakshan has failed to hit the theatres today in UP, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh as the state governments of these states has banned the film. The makers have agreed to around 8-9 minutes of cuts so it could make it in these states over the weekend.

The film will be releasing elsewhere but there will is likely to extra security in case of any incidents. The controversy over the last few days has definitely created a lot more awareness of the film and could be a better opening than it would have been without the controversy but the flipside is the ban in three states means the film will lose around 20% of the marke.

Ek Tha Tiger - First Look

Aarakshan Movie Review - Pankaj Sabani(Glamsham.com)

In the very first scene of AARAKSHAN, Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan), while giving a college interview, is made fun of because of his caste. He storms off the room, not before insulting the interviewees and the film begins on a high note. However, as the clock ticks, the graph of the film only heads South.

AARAKSHAN is about Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh Bachchan), who has been the pillar of a private college in Bhopal for more than 30 years. The idealistic principal believes in merit, but at the same time is considerate towards poor students who can't score great marks. Deepak who is immensely helped by Prabharkar, is in love with his daughter, Poorbi (Deepika Padukone). Sushant (Prateik) is a good friend of Poorbi and studies in the same college.

A comment in a newspaper on the Supreme Court's order on reservation lands Prabhakar in a tough spot. He resigns from his post giving way to the scheming Mithilesh Singh (Manoj Bajpai), who's part of the institute but concentrates more on his private coaching classes. Due to his evil plans, Prabhakar and his family are even forced to give up their home. Will Prabhakar be able to reclaim his life, is what ensues.

Based on the social issue of reservation, Prakash Jha's AARARSHAN has its heart at the right place. But it takes so long to convey its message that you run out of patience. The first half, despite taking too long (two back-to-back songs) to get to the central plot, is pretty good. The conflicts between the characters make for a compelling watch. But after the interval, Prakash loses his grip as the narrative just drags. It becomes laborious and repetitive watch, with the story moving at a snail's pace. The climax is too good to be true and fails to have a great impact.

AARAKSHAN reminds one of Prakash's last film, RAAJNEETI, but doesn't match up to the finesse and drama of it. However, it does have the potential to start off a new debate on the issue of reservation by providing an alternative.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is disappointing with none of the songs making a mark. Sachin Kumar Krishnan's cinematography is fine. Santosh Mandal's editing could have been a lot crispier.

Amitabh Bachchan delivers an outstanding performance and fits the role to the T. Note the scene after he resigns and leaves college. His look just says it all. It proves that he still has the hunger left in him. Saif Ali Khan acts well and makes his character believable. Deepika Padukone is decent. Manoj Bajpai plays his subdued negative character to perfection. Prateik acts poorly and needs to improve a lot. Darshan Jariwala is good. Yashpal Sharma is effective. Hema Malini's cameo makes little sense.

You won't miss much if you don't 'reserve' a seat for AARAKSHAN.

Aamir not the new Munna Bhai

Is Aamir Khan the new Munnabhai? Has he replaced Sanjay Dutt in the hugely popular and successful film franchise? Well, that's what a section of the media would like us to believe. According to these sources, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director Rajkumar Hirani have now approached Aamir to enact the title role, thus taking the MUNNABHAI series to the next level. But the man in question, Aamir Khan, laughs off the development.

"Really? Is that what people are saying? I am unaware of it," Aamir tells Bollywood Hungama. Even if Aamir is unacquainted with the rumor, will he step into Sanju Baba's shoes and essay the lovable character of Munnabhai, if the makers offered him the role? "No way! I think there cannot be a better Munnabhai than Sanju. If the makers do approach me with the role in question, I would hand over Sanju's cell phone number to them," he smiles. Sanju Baba fans can heave a sigh of relief!
