Joker Boxoffice Opening Pre Release Prediction - Gautam Batra

Joker is an upcoming Hindi fantasy adventure film directed by Shirish Kunder, and also his second directorial venture after Jaan-E-Mann. The film stars Akshay Kumar opposite Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles. This will be the second film in which Sonakshi is paired opposite Akshay after Rowdy Rathore. The film will release worldwide on August 31, 2012.

Lets start with the prediction....

1. Promos have got positive response from major part of audience but music has been a low key.

2. Buzz is too low due to poor promotions.

3. It promises to be a different kind of film with good amount of humour, drama added with sci-fi & alien element. Also good amount of visual effects(VFX) are added to the movie which will encourage class audience & specially kids to watch it once.

4. Though there is not any mass appeal in movie but presence of Akshay Kumar who is coming after two big hits will help to attract the audience to theatres.

On the whole opening will be average and the movie will depend on good word of mouth to pickup & sustain for a long run, as there are consecutive big releases for next few weeks. First day could be in the range of  7-8 crore nett.

Disclaimer:The prediction is my own idea gathered from the surveys & buzz about the movies. It is accurate to best of my knowledge but the final boxoffice figures can be sometimes different due to uncertainity in boxoffice. The figures given are the nett domestic figures.

Big B to play Pak national in Pookutty's directorial debut?

If all goes well, Amitabh Bachchan will play a Pakistani national in Oscar winner sound designer Resul Pookutty's directorial debut. Pookutty confirms that he has approached Bachchan for the role.

“I have approached Mr Bachchan for the film that I want to direct. The character is from another country. But it is not a political film. It’s an extremely humane subject that touches the lives of people on both sides of the border,” Pookutty told

Pookutty who bagged an Academy award for Best Sound Mixing says that his old classmate Amitabh Singh approached him with the script of the movie.

"I was completely blown away. I had to direct this film, and direct it with Mr Bachchan in the lead," Pookutty was quoted by the tabloid.

Meanwhile Big B would be back with the fresh season of Kaun Banega Crorepati on September 7.

Motwane's urge to shoot 'Lootera' in real snow

Sonakshi Sinha's on-screen love story with Ranveer Singh in Lootera is now complete or almost complete. The love story based on an O'Henry short-story was shot entirely in artificial snow, as the real snows of Kashmir proved to be not friendly for shooting purposes at all.

But now, the film's team-- and that includes its reticent director Vikramaditya Motwane --has decided to shoot at least a small portion of the film in real snow. The initial plans of releasing the film by year-end have therefore been dropped, so that one last attempt can be made to catch a portion of the film in real snow in Kashmir in December or January.

Says a source close to the project, "It is really a matter of a good omen. You can't make a film about love in the snow without real snow. The entire team thinks it would be inappropriate to make a film about a love story in a snow-scape without real snow. So although the shooting is now complete and no one can tell the film has been shot in artificial snow, thanks to the sophisticated snow-producing machine that was imported to do the needful, the film's shooting would still be stalled until at least 10 minutes of the footage is shot in real snow."

Apparently, Sonakshi and Ranveer have given their nod to the idea, although Ranveer hurt his back very badly while trying to shoot in the snow the last time.

Interestingly, Sanjay Leela Bhansali who shot his snow-fall scenes in Black in artificial snow after it was impossible to shoot in real snow in Simla, has advised his erstwhile assistant Vikramaditya Motwane to avoid real snow. But Motwane is not listening.

Ek Tha Tiger has a strong second Monday

Ek Tha Tiger will gross around 30 crore nett over its second week as it collected around 3 crore nett on Monday. The film is holding collections better in Delhi/UP, East Punjab, Gujarat and the Central India markets while the drops are larger in places like Maharashtra and South.

The business of the film will be around 173 crore nett after two weeks and is looking at a 185-190 crore nett lifetime total. It will be the second highest grosser in India of all time while the distributor share will be highest of all time.

The final domestic distributor share will be 105 crore approx which is more than 3 Idiots and the first time that the 100 crore barrier has been surpassed.

Gangs Of Wasseypur 2 two week total business

Gangs Of Wasseypur collected 3 crore nett approx in week two taking its total to 21.50 crore nett approx. The distributor share in two weeks is around 10.25 crore approx. Below is the second week territorial breakdown of the film.

Mumbai - 98 lakhs

Delhi/UP - 1.02 crore

East Punjab - 21 lakhs

West Bengal - 10 lakhs

Bihar - 7 lakhs

CP Berar - 15 lakhs

CI - 11 lakhs

Rajasthan - 8 lakhs

Nizam/Andhra - 5 lakhs

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi has a below par weekend

Shirin Farhad made little impact at the box office over the weekend. The film started slowly and did not pick up much on Saturday. It collected around 3.50 crore nett over the first two days with Friday collecting 1.60 crore nett and Saturday 1.90 crore nett.

Sunday was also not that strong with collections looking to come in the 2.25-2.50 crore nett so the weekend will be around 6 crore nett on a best case scenario. The film has collected better in Mumbai city and Delhi city multiplexes but collections in CPCI, Rajasthan and Gujarat multiplexes are very low. The film was screened on very few single screens and response was very dull.

The weekdays will probably remain steady with low collections and with the good flow of films over the next few weeks the film will struggle from week two onwards.

Ek Tha Tiger Total Business till second weekend

Ek Tha Tiger had a solid second weekend with collections likely to come in at around 19-20 crore nett. Friday was around 4.50 crore nett and Saturday was 6.25 crore nett and Sunday should come in at around 8.50-9 crore nett.

The film has grossed around 163 crore nett after its second weekend which is phenomenal and considering the huge first week, the second weeknd collections are also very good. Only Three Idiots, Dabangg and Rowdy Rathore have collected more in their respective second weekend's. Films like Ready, Housefull 2 and Golmaal 3 all collected in the same range as Ek Tha Tiger but these films were not coming off a huge extended first week.

If we compare with Bodyguard which was releases in the same period last year that film grossed 14.25 crore nett over its second weekend. Ek Tha Tiger should do around 30 crore nett over its second week.

Ek Tha Tiger Week One Territorrial Breakdown

Ek Tha Tuger collected a huge 143.25 crore nett approx in its extended first week of nine days. The first week distributor share was a massive 87.50 crore approx which is more than any other film apart from Three Idiots. Below is the first week territorial breakdown of the film and big city figures from the two big circuits.

Mumbai/Thane - 18.60 crore

Ahmedabad - 6 crore

Pune - 4.80 crore

Mumbai Circuit - 49.57 crore

Ghaziabad - 3 crore

Lucknow - 1.98 crore

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi First Day Business

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi grossed around 1.75 crore nett on day one as per early estimates. The film only collected worthwhile collections in Mumbai, Delhi/UP and East Punjab. A circuit like Rajasthan collected just 6 lakhs nett on day one.

The film will be totally dependent on the Saturday growth and if it can towards the 2.75-3 crore nett number then it will have chances but if growth is limited in the 20-30% range then it will find it tough.

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi collected 40 lakhs nett in Delhi/UP and 18 lakhs nett in East Punjab. the Mumbai circuit should come in at around 70 lakhs nett.

Ek Tha Tiger Second Friday Business

Ek Tha Tiger had good collections on its second Friday. There is a drop but overall collections are still at a high level. Below are second Friday figures from some circuits with first Friday figures of those circuits in brackets.

Delhi/UP - 100 (255)

East Punjab - 38 (122)

CI - 17 (43)

Rajasthan - 26 (74)

All figures in lakhs

The drop in the above circuits combined is around 63% but the circuit totals are better than most films, so its possible the film can come out with a good second weekend too if it shows good growth on Saturday and Sunday. The collections should come in at around 4.50-4.75 crore nett on its second Friday giving it potential for a 20 crore nett weekend.

Ek Tha Tiger opens to fantastic response in Overseas but lower than Bodyguard

Ek Tha Tiger  had very strong numbers Overseas as it collected around $4.75 million in five days. The business was a bit weak in the United Kingdom due to pre Eid period but should be very strong from Monday onwards and despite this sort of start may still do $1.5 million in United Kingdom.

The pre Eid period and a non Pakistan release has kept the overall Overseas figures of Ek Tha Tiger figures below Bodyguard. United Kingdom and UAE are affected the most but the film should go strong in these markets over the weekdays and second weekend and the lifetime business of Ek Tha Tiger should easily emerge higher than Bodyguard. Below are the comparative figures for both films in major markets.

United Kingdom
Ek Tha Tiger - £543,000 ( 5 days)
Bodyguard - £840,000 (5 days plus paid previews)

North America (3 days)
Ek Tha Tiger - $1,140,000
Bodyguard - $864,000

UAE (5 days)
Ek Tha Tiger - $1,200,000
Bodyguard - $1,575,000

Australia (5 days)
Ek Tha Tiger - $395,000
Bodyguard - $247,000

Gulshan Grover to play MF Hussain?

He was a painter par excellence, who managed to give India its global standing on the international stage in arts; he is none other than Late M. F. Husain. Though the artist was in the midst of controversies towards the end of his life, due to some of his works, Bollywood seems to have taken a liking in him. In fact we now learn that there will soon be a film inspired by Husain's life.

Apparently, the said film will not be a biopic; instead it will be about an artist who gives back to society through his work. Directed by ad-man Shashank Shekhar, we hear that Gulshan Grover has been signed on to play the lead character inspired by Husain.

Gulshan will be seen sporting long hair coupled with Husain's trademark stubble and move around barefoot in the film.

Ek Tha Tiger shows jump on Saturday

Ek Tha Tiger had a very good jump on Saturday as all circuits grew very well, some around 10% and others were nearly 50% up.

The Saturday business should come in around the 15.5-16 crore nett range which takes the total in four days to a huge 73 crore nett.

Mumbai, Delhi/Up, East Punjab and Mysore all saw big jumps in business and it is likely that the circuits which jumped less will show huge jumps on Sunday.

The extended five day weekend of the film should come in around 93 crore nett or even higher.

Ek Tha Tiger drops in Mass centres on Thursday

Ek Tha Tiger had pretty big falls in the mass areas across India but multiplexes have held up better especially in North India. There are circuits which have seen falls of nearly 60% but big markets like Delhi/UP and East Punjab are down less than 50% going by early numbers.

This is the trend nowadays that the higher you go on a national holiday the bigger the fall will on the a normal working day. Still Ek Tha Tiger has grossed in the 15 crore nett range s per early estimates on its second day which is record or near record collections for a non holiday and the figure looks even better considering the first day was a huge 31 crore nett plus.

The two day figures are 46 crore nett  plus as per early estimates and the first three days look like going towards 60 crore which is 7-8 crore more than what any other film has collected over the first three days.

Himesh to remake Punjabi Blockbuster "Jatt & Juliet"

Himesh Reshammiya is back, and how. While he is back to composing for quite a few films, he is also taking his stint as a producer quite seriously. Once he would wrap up shooting of Khiladi 786, he would also begin work on the Hindi remake of Punjabi blockbuster Jatt & Juliet, the rights of which he has acquired.

''While so many filmmakers are running down South to pick up films for remakes, Himesh has wasted no time in heading North and finalized a Punjabi film Jatt & Juliet. He would be remaking the film under his banner HR Musik", confirms a close associate.

The film's cast is yet to be decided and though Himesh is also acting in Khiladi 786 along with Akshay Kumar, it is yet to be seen who faces the camera for Jatt & Juliet remake.

"There would be an announcement in this regard soon but one thing is sure, just like Khiladi 786, even Jatt & Juliet remake would have A-lister hero and heroine", the associate adds.

When released a few weeks back, Jatt & Juliet turned out to be the biggest blockbuster in the history of Punjabi cinema as it also broke the record of Bodyguard up North. Now that Himesh has all-India plans for the film, it has to be seen how far he goes in making it suitable for universal audience.

A source adds, "First thing that he is doing in this direction is to compose music for the entire album. The film would have music on the lines of Namastey London which also had a Punjabi base to it."

Riding high on the success of Bodyguard music still doing well, 'Chalao Naa' from Bol Bachchan gaining good popularity, 'Go Go Govinda' [OMG - Oh My God] doing well in this festive season and Son Of Sardaar carrying good reports, Himesh is happy to be scoring well on the music front. Now with the rights of Jatt & Juliet being acquired, it would be interesting to see if the film reverses the trend of South remakes and brings Punjabi remakes in vogue.

Ek Tha Tiger sets new club for opening day

Ek Tha Tiger has taken opening box office collections to a new high as it has collected 31-32 crore nett as per early estimates. Its a 40% jump from the previous record which was 22 crore nett approx set by Agneepath earlier this year.

Ek Tha Tiger has shattered records all over by recording capacity or near capacity houses all over on the widest release ever.

Mumbai will come in over 10 crore for the first time. CP Berar, Rajasthan and Nizam have all crossed the 1.50 crore barrier for the first time, it was only last year that these circuits crossed the 1 crore mark for opening day with Bodyguard. Mysore may also make it to the 1.50 crore mark.

The opening again proves that the action genre with a superstar on a big national holiday is unbeatable at the box office. When these three lethal combinations have come together it has proved to be record breaking over the last few years.

Ek Tha Tiger Boxoffice Opening Pre Release Prediction - Gautam Batra

Ek Tha Tiger is an upcoming 2012 Bollywood romantic action thriller film starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Produced by Aditya Chopra and Directed by Kabir Khan, the film marks the third collaboration of Kabir Khan with Yash Raj Films after Kabul Express (2006) and New York (2009). It is also Salman's first film with the company. The music for the film has been composed by Sohail Sen, along with a guest composition by duo Sajid-Wajid.

Lets start the prediction...

1. Trailers of the movie have got fabulous response from audience & there is great excitement among
both masses & classes for the movie. Though music has been the week point but the great buzz   for the film will ensure a great amount of fottfalls.

2. As "Ek Tha Tiger" will release on natonal holiday, this factor will boost up the business for sure on its first day.

3. Ticket prices are hiked for the movie and Yash Raj Banner is going to release the movie on highest amount of screens ever.

4. Unmatchable Starpower of Salman Khan with all these factors adding up will give an Historic opening to the movie.

5. Opening in Muslim dominated areas will not be great due to Ramzan period but overall it will get an bumper response when released at boxoffice.

On the whole, Ek Tha Tiger will shatter all the previous opening & single day records this Wednesday. The opening day is estimated to be in the region of  24.50-25.50 crore nett approx.

Disclaimer:The prediction is my own idea gathered from the surveys & buzz about the movies. It is accurate to best of my knowledge but the final boxoffice figures can be sometimes different due to uncertainity in boxoffice. The figures given are the nett domestic figures.

GOW 2 has poor opening weekend

Gangs Of Waseeypur 2 had a poor extended weekend of 15-15.50 crore nett as per early estimates. These collections would have been good if it was a three day weekend but from for five days plus paid previews its a poor total.

The film's collections on Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all in the same range as the film grossed in between 3 and 3.50 crore nett on all three days.

There is not much hope for he film with Ek Tha Tiger releasing on Wednesday but it was always going to be tough task for the film as Gangs Of Wasseypur 1 found little appreciation therefore making it much harder for the second part to put up better numbers.

The film has around two more days to collect as Ek Tha Tiger will take most of the single screens Jism 2 is playing on at present leaving it with 1-2 shows at multiplexes.

Mohammad Ashraf Gondal, vice chairman of the CBFC, told thedaily: "A few board members watched the trailer. Filhaal single opinion nahi hai. Sheikh Amjad Rasheed from IMGC Global Entertainment, the distributor of the film in Pakistan, was quoted by the daily, "They have asked for the print by August 12. On August 13, the final content will be watched and a decision taken. But hopefully, Eid tak Pakistan ke theatres mein film lag jaayegi."

The trailer of Kabir Khan’s much-awaited romantic thriller was banned in Pakistan.

Rafiq Gangjee of Yash Raj Films (YRF), which has produced the film had said, “Certain films in the past have shown the country (Pakistan) in a bad light, but unfortunately, we have to pay the price. It’s possibly as a result of this that the theatrical trailer of Ek Tha Tiger has been restrained from being aired in Pakistan.”

“If you see the body of work that YRF and Salman Khan have done, you will appreciate that we would never go down this route,”  he added.

Ganjee further added:  “We will follow the law of the land and seek an official censor certificate by showing the film to the authorities at the right time. We are confident that there will be no issues after that.”

The film, which releases on August 15, is the story of a Trinity College scientist who is suspected of selling missile technology secrets to Pakistan. Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum Holds Steady

Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum held steady at the start of its third weekend as it collected around 50 lakhs nett. The drop is just 60% from last week.

It faced competition from Jism 2 last week which was a strong starter while this week the competition is much weaker in the form of Gangs Of Wasseypur part 2.

The drop in week when Jism 2 released was 80% while the drop this week when Gangs Of Wasseypur releases is just 60%. It shows how a strong competition can hit business as if Jism 2 did not come, Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum would have dropped much less than 80% and could have done close to 50 crore nett business.

The film should add around 1.75 crore nett over the weekend as Saturday will see strong growth.

GOW 2 Drops On Thursday

Gangs Of Wasseypur part 2 dropped on Thursday after a low opening on Wednesday. The collections on Thursday were around the 2.25 crore nett mark which is a 15-20% drop from Wednesday.

The business of two days including paid previews is 5.50 crore nett which is poor. The may do a bit better over the weekend but from these low levels it needs a huge turnaround. Gangs Of Wasseypur part 2 will not even do the business of the first part of Gangs Of Wasseypur which in itself was poor at the box office.

The collections on day two dropped all over the country be it where it was dull or where the collections were a bit better like Delhi/NCR.

Emraan - Vidya to shoot secretly for "Ghanchakkar"

The director Rajkumar Gupta of Ghanchakkar plans to shoot his lead pair Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan in busy areas of South Mumbai with secret cameras. Such locational liberties with two of the most popular stars in places like Worli, Nariman Point, Colaba and Fort, appears potentially dangerously.

Laughs Gupta, "It is suicidal. I plan to shoot with them in South Mumbai from the second week of September with secret cameras. But I can't predict how secret Emraan and Vidya's impromptu presence on the crowded streets and sites of South Mumbai can be. While we are shooting in relatively quiet spots of Mumbai in August during the rains, the September schedule is a b.tch."

Emraan and Vidya need substantial workshop training to face the camera as a loud boisterous Punjabi couple.

Says Gupta, "They play characters they've never played before. It a challenge to them as much to me. I am sure Emraan will accommodate us as much as possible."

Freshly joining the Ghanchakkar cast are, Rajesh Sharma, who played the helpful cop in Gupta's No One Killed Jessica, and Namit Das the bright young actor who played Ranbir Kapoor's pal in Wake Up Sid.

Preity visits Salman to show Ishkq In Paris Trailer!

Salman Khan had a surprise guest at Yash Raj Studios where he was doing interviews for his upcoming film, Ek Tha Tiger, yesterday. It was none other than his co-star, Preity Zinta who is making a comeback with Ishkq In Paris.

When asked about the purpose of her visit, Preity reveals, "I came here to show my film's trailer to Salman and take his feedback. I have always valued his opinion." Preity who has also turned producer with this film informs that she was there because the film's trailer is being cut at YRF studios. When she found out that Salman is also at the studio she dropped by to meet him.

So what was Salman's feedback? Preity who waited for almost an hour informs, "Salman seems to be very busy tonight. I haven't been able to show him the trailer. I am planning to go to his place tomorrow as his feedback is very important for me." Palpably nervous, she adds, “I hope he likes it. I don't know what he is going to say?”

Is she enjoying her new role of a producer? "Not at all. It's such a thankless job. The worst thing is that I have to sign countless times. Today I have signed nearly 200 cheques. My hand was paining after a while. I asked my mom, 'Can't I put my thumb impression instead of signing? It will make life much easier'. My mom didn't know how to react at my stupid idea," Preity quips.
