Akshay wants to remake Tamil film 'Ko'

Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn are not the only actors to keep watch on good South films; Akshay Kumar, too, has joined the bandwagon. The actor has started watching them quite often these days. It's believed that he is planning to remake a Tamil film 'Ko' in Hindi.

According to an industry insider, the actor attended a special screening of the recently released Tamil film 'KO' and was impressed by the story. It is believed that Akki spoke to director KV Anand and expressed his desire to buy the remake rights of the film.

The source adds that the actor also discussed about producing the remake under his banner. If that happens, Akshay will be seen in the role of a photojournalist, played by Jeeva in the original. Akshay is yet to decide his director though names like Priyadarshan and Anthony D'Souza being considered.

Apart from Jeeva, 'Ko' starred Karthika and Prakash Raaj in lead roles.

Chalo Dilli & Shor in the city weekend business

It was a dull weekend at the box office with the new releases not offering much. Chalo Delhi and Shor In The City managed to pick up a bit on Saturday and Sunday but no major turnaround.

The other releases like I Am, Men Will Be Men, Naughty @ 40 and Queens! Destiny Of Dance were total non starters.

Chalo Delhi managed the best collections of all new releases as it fared better in the Delhi/NCR area. The film collected around 3.50 crore nett and can get near the 5.50 crore nett for the week. The film picked up on Saturday but Sunday jump was minimal.

Shor In The City grossed around 1.75 crore nett over the weekend. Its best business was in some Mumbai multiplexes. The film should do around 3 crore nett over the week.

Dhari overseas weekend business

Dharti had an bumper opening at the box office in India, Canada, US, Australia & New Zealand but UK has played a huge spoilsport. Checking out the box office figures of Dharti , one is surely going to get a shocker by looking at the UK collections.

After having a record weekend gross of 1.70 crores in India, Dharti has also grossed a record $375,000 overseas on just 45 prints. With this, the combined weekend gross of Dharti is 3.40 Crores, which is the biggest opening weekend for a Punjabi film beating Mel Karade Rabba (2010) by the same team that collected 2.8 Crores. Dharti (2011) has grossed 20% higher than Mel Karade Rabba (2010).

Breakup:
India: 1.67 Crores - Excellent
Australia: $136,000 -  Bumper
N. America: $162,000 - Excellent
UK: £18000 on 7 Screens - Under performed

Though the opening weekend is a record for any Punjabi film ever, the expected weekend gross of 4 crores at the Box Office could not be fulfilled. Some of the reasons that went against the film are the serious political theme, no room for romance or comedy, length of the film (just 2 hours and 6 minutes), UK under performance and also some part of the media/fans being extremely critical about the film. It must be noted that among all these negative factors against it, Dharti (2011) has scored huge 1st weekend and drops of 30-35% on monday can still ensure it to be among the top 3 biggest grosser of All Time in Punjabi Cinema.

Dharti first week business

Dharti (2011) has collected 2.65 crores in India beating the 1st week record of the Mel Karade Rabba (2010). ThisNavaniat Singh directed film has earlier taken a bumper opening and an excellent weekend but eventually saw drops from Monday.

Breakup (East Punjab):
Weekend- 1.67 Crores
Monday- 30 Lacs
Tuesday- 24 Lacs
Wednesday- 21 lacs
Thursday- 18 lacs
Total week- 2.60 Crores

Jimmy Sheirgill's last release Mel Karade Rabba (2010) is the highest grosser in Punjabi Cinema. Dharti is unlikely to cross the lifetime gross of Mel Karade Rabba (2010). The weekday business of Dharti (2011) is steady but not on par with Mel Karade Rabba (2010) which were exceptional. Nevertheless, Dharti (2011) is set to be the among the top 3 highest grosser of Punjabi Cinema.
