Ra.one monday early estimates

Ra.One (Hindi) has grossed around 6 crore nett as per early estimates on Monday. The collections on Monday are pretty decent as when Sunday is lower than Saturday, a huge crash is expected but considering the 13.25 crore nett collections on Sunday, the 6 crore nett number is more than the film could have hoped for on Monday.

The film has now collected 87 crore nett in its first four days and should get to around 100 crore nett over its first week.

The Sunday figure suggested it could go into in its second weekend with very low collections and little hope of taking any advantage from the four day second weekend but now it may be able to have a decent collection from its extended second weekend.

The collections are being helped by holidays in Gujarat and the star power of Shahrukh Khan in circuits like West Bengal and Mysore. The regionals versions are down badly and are hardly collected on Monday.

Desi Boyz New Song Video "Subha Hone Na De"

Ra.one first weekend business

Ra.One (Hindi) had a huge extended five day weekend of around 81 crore nett as per early estimates. The regional versions were around 4.50 crore nett making it 85.50 crore nett.

The Hindi version fell around 4 crore short of the total set by Bodyguard which also had an extended five day weekend.

Ra.One had a huge Thursday by recording the highest day in history and even Friday was good but the film did not go through on Saturday and Sunday as collections hardly showed a jump on both days.

Saturday is okay but Sunday is expected to grow but here Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all in the same region.

The weekend trend suggest a drops in the weekdays but the film has already got a healthy total in five days and it has regional holidays in the weekdays which may help collections in some parts.

Munni to turn Anarkali for Housefull 2

After Munni Badnaam Hui in Dabangg, Malaika Arora Khan will be seen in yet another item song. This song is Anarkali Disco Chali in the Akshay Kumar-Jacqueline Fernandez starrer Housefull 2.

In the song, Malla will don six different outfits ranging from desi to western. She says, "It's been over a year since Munni happened and everyone has been asking me about my next time song. When Sajid (Khan) offered me the Anarkali song, I fell in love with it and said yes." What did she like about the song? Pat comes the reply, "I liked the fact that Anarkali is completely different from Munni, from the clothes to the music. What's similar is the choreographer - Farah Khan. She and I have a superb track record and we intend to keep it going strong."

Farah says, "Malaika looks like a million bucks in this new song. She's a mixture of Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce. I try not to repeat the steps or ambience of the songs and like to create something new and different each time." Director Sajid Khan reveals that Malaika also has a cameo in the film, apart from the item number, "I am superstitious about Malaika. She has been part of my first film Heyy Babyy She also did a cameo in Housefull. So fi had to repeat her in my third film."

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala lists why Munni was chosen for the song. "Malaika's a part of Sajid Khan's trilogy and a lucky mascot for us. She always adds a touch of class and grace to any item song and who better than Munni to become Anarkali?" Not Sheila for sure!

Ra.One din't grow much on sunday

Ra.One has found it hard to make any headway on Sunday. The film may end with Sunday collections not much higher than Saturday.

Normally films jump at least 10% on Sunday but it seems unlikely in the case Ra.One unless the markets in South India and West Bengal are really strong.

The trend is not encouraging for Sunday in North India and when a major segment like North is finding it tough, it will be a huge surprise if the film manages to come out with a strong Sunday.

The overall weekend is still likely to excellent but the trend suggests the film will struggle in the long term.

Ra.one fourth day early estimates

Ra.One (hindi) dropped on its fourth day as it collected around 14-14.25 crore nett as per early estimates. The major drops came in the North India and Central India as these places dropped around 15%. West Bengal and South had similar collections to the day before while Mumbai circuit was a bit less.

The film has now collected 67 crore nett now after four days which is exactly the same same collection Bodyguard had after four days. The regional version has collected 4.50 crore nett in four days and is dropping fast.

The 5 day weekend record of Bodyguard will be a photo finish if Ra.One shows the normal growth expected on Sunday. This is comparing like for like and the Hindi version only.

Sunday is likely to tell where the film is going, a good 25% jump will mean it will do good on the weekdays but if it is flat or just a 10-15% jump then weekdays are likely to see dropping collections.

Joker release date confirmed

Plans have been confirmed for Joker. The Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha starrer fantasy-adventure entertainer would be releasing all over on 30th August 2012. This development also puts an end to speculations around the film's eventual arrival, something that was making the rounds of trade and industry circles for last few weeks.

While Siddharth Roy Kapur of UTV Motion Pictures confirmed the news, director Shirish Kunder added that plans for next 10 months have been chalked out. He said, "Yes, we have 15 days of shooting left which would be completed in November. Post that we would be working on VFX and 3D for six odd months and then last couple of months would be reserved for an all around promotional campaign."

Joker had gone on floors early this year and over 70% of the film has already been canned. Since the film is being shot in 3D, there has been added emphasis on getting the entire shot taking right in the very first go as the team can't afford to re-do anything.

One wonders though what took the makers of Joker to wait for so long before making a formal announcement. After all a film starring Akshay Kumar typically gets completed in a jiffy and announcement of it's release plans are typically made well in advance, case in point being Desi Boyz, Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore and Khiladi 786 - Made In Punjab.

"Well, the speed at which technology is growing, we wanted to make best use of what was available to us after we were through with the final schedule. We didn't want to announce a release date and then regret losing out on something new that would have come up at a later stage", reasons Shirish, "Now that we are into the final schedule, it is time to get into post production pronto. We have the latest technology available to us now and we are going ahead with that. It would take us six more months to reach the finishing line now and hence 30th August is just apt."

This development also means Akshay Kumar would now have a film of his releasing almost every second month starting April. While Housefull 2 (April) would be first to arrive, Rowdy Rathore (June), Joker (August) and Khiladi 786 - Made In Punjab (November) would follow one after another. Meanwhile one also waits with bated breath to know about the arrival ofOnce Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 which is most likely to move ahead of it's original August 2012 plans.

Ra.One three day actual business

The third day of Ra.One (Hindi) has come in lower than estimated earlier at 15.50 crore nett. This makes it a three day total of 53 crore nett. It is a record for first three days but by a very small margin.

The Tamil and Telugu versions have collected around 4 crore nett over three days which gives it a 57 crore nett all languages total.

The regional versions have performed better than any Hindi film before in just three days but there was big drop on third day and for the number of prints in play for regional version its an average performance.

The top first three day nett grossers of Hindi cinema are as follows.

1. Ra.One (Hindi) - 53 crore approx

2. Bodyguard - 52.60 crore

3. Dabangg - 48.82 crore

4. Ready - 42.23 crore

5. Three Idiots - 37.98 crore

6. Tees Maar Khan - 36.59 crore

7. Golmaal 3 - 34.81 crore

Ra. one third day early estimates

Ra.One (Hindi) did well on its third day by collecting around 16.50 crore nett as per early estimates. the film has set a record three day collection of 54 crore nett. Bodyguard was 52.50 crore nett approx and Dabangg was 48.75 crore nett approx. These are the only three films to collect around the 50 crore nett mark for three days.

The regional versions of the film saw a big fall on Friday. The film is likely to be driven by multiplexes from now on. Single screens will get a boost on Sunday but overall appreciation is better in the multiplexes of big centres.

The weekend is looking to settle in the 85-90 crore nett region as Saturday may well see a drop although business will be up and down depending on the circuit.

Damadamm & Tell Me Oh Kkhuda get extremely poor response

Ra.One released on Wednesday opened to superb response all over and has just edged out Bodyguard and set a new high for the first three days. The film has mixed reports and mass centres are likely to see drops while urban centres will have a good run for two weeks.

Damadamm and Tell Me Oh Khuda opened to a poor 0-5% response on Thursday. Both film will go unnoticed due to the Ra.One wave.

The other releases like Mujhse Fraandship Karoge, Rascals, etc had an abrupt end to their run with the release of Ra.One on Wednesday.

Tell Me o Kkhuda Movie Review - Komal Nahta

Esha Deol goes on a search for her biological parents when she learns that she has been adopted by the parents she is living with. More in the review of Tell Me O Kkhuda.

Business rating: 0.5 / 5 star

Star cast: Esha Deol, Arjan Bajwa, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Farooque Shaikh, Dipti Naval, Johny Lever.

What’s Good: Performance of Esha Deol; a couple of emotional scenes.

What’s Bad: The uninteresting screenplay; the action sequences which look out of place.

Verdict: Tell Me O Kkhuda is a flop fare.

Loo break: Not really.

Watch or Not?: Watch it if you like family dramas.

Miraj Group and H.M. Creations’ Tell Me O Kkhuda is the story of a girl’s search for her parents. Tanya Kapoor (Esha Deol) lives with her parents (Farooque Shaikh and Dipti Naval). She has a boyfriend, Jai (Arjan Bajwa). One day, Tanya is shocked to chance upon some papers which show that she is not the biological daughter of her parents but is rather adopted by them. She is sad but decides to locate her parents. A visit to the municipal office reveals that a fire had broken out in the hospital when and in which she was delivered 24 years ago and that had caused deaths and separation. The municipal officer hazards a guess that she could, perhaps, be the daughter of one Abhay Pratap Rana (Vinod Khanna) of Rajasthan. Seeking her foster parents’ permission, Tanya sets out for Rajasthan in search of the man who could possibly be her father. Accompanying her are Jai and his friend, Kuki (Chandan Roy Sanyal). Much to her sorrow, Abhay Pratap Rana is at first reluctant to accept Tanya as his daughter as he is under the impression that his wife, since dead, had given birth to a baby boy. Tanya probes further and is convinced that a baby girl had been born to Rana, a fact that was hidden from him due to prejudices against the girl child in Rajasthan. Finally, Tanya is able to convince Rana about the birth of a baby girl to him 24 years ago. But just as Rana is about to accept her as his daughter, his servant confesses that it wasn’t Tanya who had been born to his wife but another girl who had been raised in the palace premises but not as his daughter. Disheartened at her misfortune but happy that she had got the girl child her due place in society, Tanya leaves from Rajasthan.

Another visit to the municipal office and Tanya, Jai and Kuki are now ready to go to Turkey to meet Altaf Zardari (Rishi Kapoor), her probable father. Once in Turkey, Tanya is shocked to see that Altaf’s wife (Meltem Cumbul) has been in a depressed state of mind for the last 24 years ever since she had been a victim of the hospital fire. Tanya, slowly but surely, gets Altaf’s wife out of her depression, all along being led (by Altaf) to believe that she was their long-lost daughter. But when it’s time for her to announce to her ‘new mother’ that she was her daughter, Altaf tells her that their child had been killed in the fire. Again heart-broken at not being able to locate her parents but happy to have brought a woman out of her depression of 24 years, Tanya leaves.

Her third destination is Goa, to meet Tony Gonsalves (Dharmendra). Is he her biological father? Who is her mother and where is she? Does Tanya unite with her biological parents?

Tell Me O Kkhuda Review – Script Analysis

The story and screenplay, both penned by Mayur Puri, Ulka Puri and Anand Vardhan Sharma, are good but move on the same pattern in each episode. All the three fathers for different reasons, at first, refuse to even acknowledge that Tanya can be the daughter they got separated from 24 years ago. While Altaf Zardari’s refusal seems justified, Rana and Tony’s denial looks far-fetched and forced. Also, her search for her parents is rarely able to evoke the emotions such a drama should, for two reasons – it follows the same path always, and the yearning to be united with her parents does not come through. Also, the reality about Tanya’s parents leaves a somewhat bad taste in the mouth due to moral reasons.

The action sequences in Tony Gonsalves’ episode looks like a complete mismatch in the family drama and seem to have been added only to justify action hero Dharmendra’s presence in the film. It would not be wrong to say that the action climax sticks out like a sore thumb in the drama.

Although the film is about a young girl in search of her parents and who is accompanied by her boyfriend, romance is as good as missing from the film. Comedy is also feeble. Emotions touch the heart only in one scene (when Tanya smudges the icing on the cake to erase the word ‘mom’ in the Zardari episode). Even the drama does not ring very true because of the poor script. Dialogues, penned by the same trio, are good.

Tell Me O Kkhuda Review – Star Performances

Esha Deol gets into the skin of the character and does a fine job of a girl in search of her parents. Arjan Bajwa has nothing worthwhile to do. Vinod Khanna is fair. Rishi Kapoor is very good. Dharmendra acts reasonably well. Hema Malini leaves a mark in a small role. Farooque Shaikh and Dipti Naval should’ve been given more significant roles. They are okay. Meltem Cumbul, as Mrs. Zardari, acts with understanding. Chandan Roy Sanyal is wasted. Sudhanshu Pandey is alright. Johny Lever evokes laughter but just about. Madhoo and Gurbachan lend ordinary support. Richa Pallod is average. Salman Khan adds star value but only in a song in the end titles.

Tell Me O Kkhuda Review – Direction & Music

Hema Malini’s direction is fairly nice but she has not been able to make the drama a tear-jerker. Pritam Chakraborty’s music is alright but needed to be far better. Someone somebody is a good song and Mera mann is fair. Other songs are hardly popular. Camerawork (Hayk Kirakosyan, Soyukut Turan, Grant Appleton, Tribhovan Babu and Aseem Bajaj) is of a good standard. The Turkey locations are eye-catching. Sets (Rajat Poddar) are good. Rameshwar Shivaji Bhagat’s editing is okay. Production values are nice.

Tell Me O Kkhuda Review – Komal Nahta’s Verdict

On the whole, Tell Me O Kkhuda does not have the merits to make any mark at the box-office.

Damadamm Movie Review - Komal Nahta

Business rating: 0.5 / 5 star

Star cast: Himesh Reshammiya, Purbi Joshi, Sonal Sehgal.

What’s Good: A couple of songs; Purbi Joshi’s acting.

What’s Bad: The holes in the screenplay; the routine story.

Verdict: Damadamm! is a dull fare which will bomb at the ticket windows.

Loo break: A couple in the two halves.

Watch or Not?: Watch it if you are a fan of Himesh Reshammiya’s music.

HR Musik’s Damadamm! (UA) is the story of Sameer (Himesh Reshammiya) torn between two girls, Shikha (Purbi Joshi) and Sanjana (Sonal Sehgal). Sameer and Shikha work in the same office and love each other. But Shikha is over-possessive and keeps nagging Sameer, especially if he speaks to any other girl. Sameer feels suffocated in the relationship because of Shikha’s over-possessiveness and nagging nature. One day, Shikha goes out of the city to her home town and is scheduled to return after some days.

In the intervening period, Sameer is introduced to his boss’ (Rajesh Khattar) sister, Sanjana, who joins the office. Sameer and Sanjana become very friendly, a fact that troubles Shikha when she returns. Shikha’s insecurity drives her to say incorrect things about Sameer and Sanjana’s relationship. This infuriates Sameer so much that he breaks off from Shikha. Obviously, Shikha is crestfallen and tries to make amends with Sameer but the latter is in no mood for a compromise.

Soon, Sameer’s boss puts forth a marriage proposal before him – he wants Sameer and Sanjana to marry each other. Sameer accepts the proposal. Shikha leaves the job and applies in another company. What happens then? Does Sameer marry Sanjana? Or does he return to Shikha? Does Shikha keep quiet or does she revolt? What stand does Sanjana take?

Damadamm! Review – Script Analysis

Himesh Reshammiya’s story about a young man torn between two women is not new as one has seen many films with similar story lines. Subrat Sinha’s screenplay is too simplistic and also a case of very convenient writing. Two major defects in the screenplay relate to the second half. Firstly, the good times Sameer and Shikha have spent in the past are revealed to the audience in the second half, only when Sameer starts repenting his break-up. Since the good times had transpired in the past, it is incorrect for the writer to only highlight Shikha’s irritating qualities in the first half while blacking out her praiseworthy qualities so that they can be shown at a later point of time in the drama. Secondly, when the estate broker, Lily Aunty (Lily Patel), tells Sameer that Shikha had wanted to buy a house for the two of them, Sameer feels miserable about breaking off from Shikha. Does that mean that Sameer is greedy and that he didn’t want the house to slip out of his hands or does it mean that he is appreciating Shikha’s sacrifice? Although the writer would have the audience believe that Sameer was appreciating Shikha’s sacrifice, it is very possible for the audience to actually assume that Sameer was greedy. Worse still, Sameer lies to Shikha when he wants to make up with her, by telling her that he had so missed her nagging and over-possessiveness. When did he miss Shikha’s nagging and over-possessiveness? The reason why he started to miss her was because he learns that she had booked a flat for both of them to live in.

Given such a flawed screenplay, the audience cannot be expected to enjoy the drama which, even otherwise, is very predictable. What’s more, there aren’t any surprises or shocks whatsoever. Dialogues (Subrat Sinha) are ordinary.

Damadamm! Review – Star Performances

Himesh Reshammiya has loosened up a lot compared to his earlier films. That he doesn’t have the looks of a hero is true but his acting is fairly good. Purbi Joshi does an absolutely splendid job. She makes every scene she appears in worth watching because of her talent. Sonal Sehgal looks very pretty. Her performance is quite nice. Rajesh Khattar is natural. Ashwin Dhar lends good support. Lily Patel is alright.

Damadamm! Review – Direction & Music

Swapna Waghmare Joshi’s direction is nothing to shout about. Her narrative style is commonplace and flat. Music, scored by Himesh Reshammiya, is good. The Madhushala’and Umrao jaan songs are the best numbers. The other songs are fairly appealing. Lyrics (Shabbir Ahmed, Sameer and Himesh Reshammiya) are passable. Song picturisations (Raju Khan) are ordinary, also because none of the three lead players is even an average dancer! Background music (by Sanjeev Srivastava) is functional. Oystein Lundstorm’s cinematography is fair. Editing (Aarif Shaikh) is average. Production values are ordinary.

Damadamm! Review – Komal Nahta’s Verdict

On the whole, Damadamm! Is a dull fare which won’t do well at the box-office.

Ra.one second day early estimates

Ra.One (Hindi) has collected around 23 crore nett as per early estimates on its second day. It is the highest collection of all time for a single day.

The first day had collected around 14.75 crore nett taking the two day total to 37.75 crore nett. The regional version collected 1.35 crore nett on its first day and day two is likely to be 1.75-2 crore nett.

The all India jump is 55% on day two which is exactly the same jump that Golmaal 3 had on its second day on Diwali.

The film will drop today as films do after a big holiday. Bodyguard came down to 13.60 crore nett on its Friday but this should remain higher as it is still a holiday in some parts of the country.

Ra.One didn't cross the first day record of Bodyguard

Ra.One will not set a new first day record as the final day collections coming in are well off record pace especially in North and Central India. Some circuits are 50% short of Bodyguard while others are similar.

Bodyguard collected 20.60 crore nett on day one and Ra.One will stay well below that even if the dubbed Tamil and Telegu versions collections are added to the collections of the Hindi version.

Delhi, Punjab, UP and MP were hit hard by Diwali puja as the film went as low as 25% for some shows in these regions and even after Diwali puja collections were no way near the morning levels.

Ra.One Movie Review - Komal Nahta

Business Rating: 3.5 / 5 stars

Star cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, master Armaan Varma.

What’s Good: Individual sequences; stars’ performances; excellent visual effects; the superlative action, the ‘Chammak Challo’ song; eye-filling photography; extraordinary back….

What’s Bad: The first 20 minutes and some portions in the second half which are boring; the story, which is about a video game, will not be fully understood by the computer-illiterate older generation.

Verdict: Ra.One has novelty and great visual effects to see it through at the box-office and ensure profits in spite of its very high cost.

Loo break: A few in the first half.

Watch or Not?: Definitely watch Ra.One for the superlative performances and the grand visual effects and the 3D effects.

Eros International and Red Chillies Entertainment’s Ra.One is the story of Shekhar Subramanium (Shah Rukh Khan), who lives in London and who is so clumsy and uncool that his young, school-going son, Pratik (master Armaan Varma), does not consider him as his hero or idol. In fact, he doesn’t even respect his father like a son should.

Meanwhile, Pratik goes to his dad’s office and between Jenny (Shahana Goswami) and Pratik, the two decide that G.One or, in other words, the Good One from the game would have to be released from the game to combat Ra.One.Now, G.One, Sonia and Pratik come to India after G.One has almost eliminated Ra.One. However, Ra.One is re-constructed one day and lands in India. What happens next? Does he find Lucifer? Does G.One protect Sonia and Pratik alias Lucifer? If so, how?

Shekhar works in a gaming company and he alongwith his colleagues makes a video game, Ra.One, in which the villain, Ra.One, is almost invincible. He makes the villain so powerful because his son tells him that heroes are boring and villains are cool. As luck would have it, Pratik, who plays games under the name of Lucifer, defeats Ra.One upto a level. Ra.One then loses his head and escapes from the computer in search of Lucifer. Soon, he kills Shekhar when he lies to him that his name is Lucifer. Shekhar has taken takes on the blame in a bid to save his son’s life. But Ra.One, who has now taken the identity of Shekhar’s own colleague Akashi (Tom Wu), does not give up his search for Lucifer alias Pratik.

Pratik and his widowed mother, Sonia (Kareena Kapoor), leave London to return to India and are given a hot chase by Ra.One. After a lot of misses, Ra.One finally confronts the mother-son duo but G.One emerges in the form of Shekhar to save them.

Ra.One Review: Script Analysis

The story, penned by Anubhav Sinha, has been liberally borrowed from several Hollywood films but it has been suitably Indianised. The Indianised screenplay, written by Kanika Dhillon, David Benullo, Mushtaq Shiekh and Anubhav Sinha, is fast-paced for a good part, but the first 20 minutes, and some portions in the second half are a bit boring. Perhaps, the most heart-touching Indian sentiment in the drama is when G.One comes to the rescue of Sonia and Pratik for the first time, appearing like Shekhar. There are other emotional moments like when Sonia takes a promise from G.One that he would save Pratik’s life, come what may, and when G.One and Pratik join forces to try and combat Ra.One in the end. Also, how Pratik is made to realise that ultimately, it is the hero who is good, and it is the villain who is evil and that good is what one should pursue, is subtle yet effective. But the emotions are understated and although they touch the heart-strings, they do not draw tears from the audience’s eyes. Had the sentiments been more pronounced, it would’ve been better as the viewers would be moved to tears.Comedy is enjoyable and entertaining but the film could’ve done with more of it, especially in the pre-interval portion. The visual effects are excellent and so are the 3D effects (for those watching in 3D). Another plus point of the drama is that it is not stretched too much. The climax, in which the young son of Shekhar collaborates with G.One, to fight the evil Ra.One is exciting in a different way – more than a nail-biting and edge-of-the-seat climax (which the chase by Ra.One in the first half is), it has heart-warming sentiments of father and son.

However, where there are less-than-required emotions, there are some sequences which are absolutely brilliant and constitute major highlights of the film. Among such highlight sequences worthy of applause in the cinemas are the one in which Ra.One chases Sonia and Pratik; the one in which G.One appears all of a sudden between Ra.One and the car in which Sonia and Pratik are seated (in this particular scene, there will be deafening applause in the cinemas); the action sequences between G.One and Ra.One; the taxi-stand sequence at Bombay airport; the Rajnikanth sequence; the sequence showing the re-construction of Ra.One first and G.One later; the train sequence, etc. Here, it must be added that although the writers and the director have taken care to explain the technicalities of the video game in a simplified manner, yet, the drama will be more understood by the city and multiplex audience than the audience in the smaller centres and those frequenting single-screen cinemas. Again, since the base of the story is the Ra.One video game, it will not be fully understood by the computer-illiterate older generation. On the other hand, kids and the youth will love the drama for the very reasons the older generation wouldn’t – it has a lot of technical jargon, the drama is more subtle and less over-dramatic; and the experience is absolutely novel for the Indian audiences.

Ra.One Movie Review: Star Performances

Shah Rukh Khan does a splendid job and is the life of the film. He is good as Shekhar and fantastic as G.One. The look of G.One is wonderful. Kareena Kapoor is also lovely. She looks gorgeous and acts with effortless ease. She is brilliant in emotional scenes. Both, Shah Rukh and Kareena’s dances are remarkable. Arjun Rampal makes an effective villain and looks very handsome and formidable. Master Armaan Varma makes a sensational debut. He looks charming and acts with such aplomb that it is difficult to believe, this is his first film. Tom Wu is menacing enough. Dalip Tahhil is stylish as ever. Shahana Goswami is as natural and realistic as can be. Satish Shah and Suresh Menon evoke laughter. Rajnikanth appears in a single scene in special appearance and makes his presence felt with mersmerising effect. Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra don’t add much in special appearances. Amitabh Bachchan’s voice over in a portion of the film heightens the impact.

Ra.One Review: Direction & Music: Anubhav Sinha’s direction is good. Credit goes to him for giving the Indian audience a supremely novel experience. He has excelled in the visual effects department as well as in extracting good work from the actors. Music (Vishal-Shekhar) could’ve been better. While the Chammak Challo song is extraordinary, the others could’ve and should’ve been better. The Dildaara song is appealing. The other songs range from fair to good. Song picturisations (Ganesh Hegde and Feroz Khan) are very eye-filling. The picturisations of Chammak Challo and Criminal songs (both by Ganesh Hegde) are extraordinary. Background score by Vishal-Shekhar is wonderful. Nicola Pecorini and V. Manikandan’s camerawork is marvellous. The film looks just too beautiful. Visual effects are outstanding. Action scenes, choreographed by Parvez Khan, Spiro Razatos and Firoz Boss, are mind-boggling. Sets (Sabu Cyril and Marcus Wookey) are lovely. The conversion from 2D to 3D (by Prime Focus) is remarkable. Production values are just too grand.

Ra.One Review: Komal Nahta’s Verdict

On the whole, Ra.One has the novelty factor and visual effects as its greatest plus points. It may be lagging in the other departments but these two – novelty and visual effects – will definitely see the high-budgeted film make profits for all concerned. Looking to the almost unprecedented hype and huge craze for the film and its grand opening, it will sail past its safety mark in the first week itself (after considering all the other sources of revenue too) and then go on to yield profits.

Ra.one Movie Review - Taran Adarsh

I've often heard people say, film-making is nothing short of a gamble. And as any gambler will tell you, you've got to gamble huge to triumph huge. Going by this logic, Shah Rukh Khan is The Supreme Gambler of the year.

What's at stake, beside the big money invested in RA.ONE of course, is a dream, a vision, an aspiration to make a film which appeals to kids and kids at heart. In short, attempt a film that appeals to the universal audience. At the same time, it ought to raise the bar for Hindi films. Also at stake is SRK's once-unchallenged supremacy as the reigning idol of Bollywood and that elusive thing called reputation. When you invest your repute in your dream project and stick your neck out, you expect nothing short of a mega-success.

Movies like KRRISH and ROBOT initiated the trend of superhero films in India, with fantasy making deep inroads into mainstream Hindi cinema. Now RA.ONE raises the bar, takes not a step or two, but a giant leap and adheres to international standards, in terms of execution. But the soul, I wish to add, is very desi. That's precisely the reason why RA.ONE emerges trumps. RA.ONE is beauty [read good looking film] with brains [read content].

What characterizes a stunning superhero movie? I have narrowed it down to three precise constituents that I deem are absolutely necessary for an alluring superhero flick. The first is that the motion picture must encompass spectacular action and edge-of-the-seat thrills. Secondly, a magnificent superhero movie must also boast of luminous performances from the protagonists, which in turn should make these characters appear credible and relatable. Thirdly and most importantly, superhero films must have a narrative that keeps us yearning for more. All of these are indispensable factors in making a superhero movie that will be both acclaimed and adored by fans. Fortunately, RA.ONE emerges triumphant in all the three departments.

RA.ONE is the most ambitious, most expensive and the most technologically complex Hindi film ever made. It pushes the envelope further. It's not merely a film, but an experience, an event. It's a film that will rewrite the textbook of computer graphics in Hindi cinema. At the same time, it is very Indian at heart. The relationship between SRK and the kid is the highpoint of the enterprise. But, at the same time, there are ample clap-trap moments that will send the viewers in frenzy. The chase sequence, when Ra.One finally zeroes on Lucifer, and the subsequent 'entry' of the superhero is awe-inspiring. The train sequence in the second hour is exceptional and a cinematic feat. The presence of Rajnikanth in a crucial sequence will be greeted with deafening claps and whistles. And, of course, the climax of the film; it's simply jaw-dropping.

Besides these factors, the 'Chammak Chhallo' number is already a rage and so are the sequences involving visual effects. In a nutshell, it's an entertainer that works big time. You haven't experienced something like this ever before, on the Hindi screen!

A father tries hard to fit into his son's world. While Shekhar [Shah Rukh Khan] tries every trick in the book to woo his son, his son had given up on him. Just when the father-son duo hit a deadlock, Shekhar strikes gold when he designs one hell of a game. Finally, it all starts falling in place. But the happiness is short-lived. All hell breaks loose when the game that was meant to be played with, starts playing them.

We are spoilt by cinema's ability to create on celluloid anything that can be imagined, therefore we have raconteurs making endeavors to bestow us with movies that you wouldn't have ever envisioned even in your mind's eye. You realize this as you watch RA.ONE, which is a visual spectacle from start to end.

Director Anubhav Sinha along with co-writers David Benullo, Kanika Dhillon and Mushtaq Shiekh may be inspired by international flicks as far as the concept is concerned, but they ensure that they serve the right masala to moviegoers in those 2.30 hours. What actually takes you by complete surprise is not just the money spent on visual effects or the stunning chase and action scenes, but the twists and turns in the screenplay that unravel at a feverish pace.

Besides, the moviegoers have certain expectations and notions about superhero flicks and they expect such characters to perform audacious aerobatics to save someone's life or a nation. But this one's different. Visually arresting and dramatically just what the doctor ordered, the film boasts of relatable characters, which makes this superhero movie for kids as well as grown-ups. In fact, I'd like to add, RA.ONE is not only skillfully directed, but also visually dynamic and entertains from commencement to conclusion.

The album of the film lives up to the grand expectations. Vishal-Shekhar deliver a striking score with 'Chammak Chhallo', 'Dildaara' and 'Raftarein' being the pick of the lot. The background score, also recorded by them, is equally electrifying. V. Manikandan and Nicola Pecorini's cinematography is top notch. Same goes for the stunts and chases [Andy Gill and Spiro Razatos]. Dialogue [Kanika Dhillon and Niranjan Iyengar] are hardly ever commonplace. What I found most interesting is that, whether humorous or thoughtful, the channel of communication appears very credible. The Ra.One and G.One suits, designed by Robert Kurtzman, are super.

RA.ONE is a perfect vehicle that does justice to the talent of Shah Rukh Khan. He seems to have found a story and character that work in perfect sync and tandem with manic energy. SRK steers this physically challenging lead role with high-spirited self-belief. He's endearing as the father and magnificent as the superhero with a heart. Kareena Kapoor is a delight to watch. She effortlessly glides into the character. Besides, she looks ethereal in the 'Chammak Chhallo' song and her wit is infectious. Arjun Rampal pulls his act with effortlessness and style. Also, Arjun's well-designed look is admirable.

I'd like to make a special mention of Armaan Verma, the kid who has a pivotal part to portray. He stands shoulder to shoulder with SRK and Kareena all through the film and delivers a super-confident performance. The film has a number of actors in key roles [Shahana Goswami, Dalip Tahil, Satish Shah, Suresh Menon, Mushtaq Shiekh and Tom Wu] and each of them fit well in their respective parts. Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra add to the glam quotient, while Rajnikanth proves yet again that he's a scene stealer.

But the man who warrants the actual round of applause is director Anubhav Sinha himself. For bringing out the best of SRK, Kareena and Arjun. For the amazing screenplay. For the speedy yet smooth stream of the narrative. And for the fantastic unfolding of the written material. He merits top admiration for every act of his.

On the whole, RA.ONE is a solid entertainer, no two opinions on that. It's not merely a great looking film, but also has soul, which is so essential to strike a chord with the avid moviegoer. As for the business prospects, RA.ONE is sure to shatter all previous records and set new ones, in India as well as internationally. The film will be the new yardstick for measuring success. It has Blockbuster written all over it!

Huge expectations in trade from Ra.One

Ra.One is looking at record breaking collections as long as the content does not disappoint.

The film can hit the 100 crore nett mark over its extended five day weekend in its Hindi version.

Bodyguard released on Eid this year collected 85.25 crore nett over its extended five day weekend and Ra.One has a bigger release and higher ticket prices. It has the potential to collect 20-25% more than Bodyguard because of these two factors.

The opening can even go higher as Bodyguard saw a noticeable drop on Friday and if Ra.One was to get universal acceptance than that drop on Friday will be less.

The promotion blitzkrieg by Shahrukh Khan has hit the nail right on its head and the hype and buzz for this film is at a level never seen before for any film. This is why multiplexes opening numbers will be at an unbelievable level but the huge promotion does reach everywhere. The crazy promotion works less as the centre gets smaller so it may not get the opening numbers of a Bodyguard in a Kisangarh, Mhow or Rudrapur but a Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore where heavy promotion means huge awareness, Ra.One is likely to be well ahead.

The other side is that Ra.One is a science fiction superhero film and these type of films have huge acceptance in the West but in India they will not connect unless there is some sort of emotional base in the film. Even if the film has a huge budget and huge special affects but does not connect with the audience it will see falling collections. In India special affects and great visuals are never enough especially outside the urban centres.

Basically if the film does not connect then all equations go out of the window as cracks in collections will start early in A,B&C centres and will follow in the metros.
